DanceSport Boston's History

"DanceSport Boston" was established in 1994.

The owners of DanceSport Boston are John & Anna Maria Paul. They are former American Style professional competitors.

John and Anna Maria have taught ballroom dancing at major universities in Boston. Including Boston University, MIT, Northeastern, Harvard Medical School, Boston College, and Boston Conservatory. Anna Maria was the founding coach for the BU Ballroom Dance Club.

In 1994 our business was 4-fold. Teaching ballroom dance. Competing in Pro-am competitions. Importing and selling the best ballroom music CD's from Europe. Selling instructional dance videos. We sold the CD’s and videos to our peers at DanceSport Competition venues in New England.

In 2004 we opened our current studio in North Weymouth. Our business focus changed. We still taught. Competed in Pro-am competitions. We retired the CD & video business. We began doing 3-day Dance Camps and our semi-annual Dance Showcases. We ran Ballroom Dance themed Gala Fundraisers. We also established our Dance Party Fridays and Saturday Ballroom Dances. The Saturday Dances were discontinued with the arrival of Covid-19. Our Dance Party Fridays continue to be held in the studio. They are open to the public. You’re welcome to join us.

DanceSport Boston’s in-depth method of dance instruction is led by Anna Maria & John Paul.

DanceSport Boston offers group classes and private lessons in both the American and International styles. Group classes are held weekly at the same time on the same day each week. Private lessons are scheduled at the mutual convenience of both our students and their instructors.

Once a month there are Saturday Morning Workshops. You'll discover a deeper understanding of some aspect of dance.

A popular one is called "Hearing the Beat". It's designed for those who are rhythmically or musically challenged. You'll never listen to music in the same way after attending a "Hearing the Beat" workshop.

"Master classes" taught by top level coaches are offered every other month. We hold weekly dances called Dance Party Fridays. Your Dance Parties are the place to gain personal confidence in applying your new dance skills.

We also provide a Latin Arms workshop, that you can learn more about here.

There's always something exciting happening at DanceSport Boston. The most exciting thing is you'll be discovering how to dance.

From day one, you'll help us create your roadmap for success in dancing. Your input is essential. That's so we get you moving right direction on your dance journey. Along the way you'll be able to track and feel your progress as you discover more about dancing. You'll receive recognition for your accomplishments from the beginner to advanced levels of ballroom dance.

Testimonials

"For pulling a name out of the phone book weeks before a trip I was taking, I think I did GREAT in picking someone to teach me to ballroom dance! I tell everyone who asks me about my dancing just where they need to go to learn as well!! The studio is not a full sized ballroom, but the teaching is excellent. Classes are great and I've met some pretty nice people. After three years I'm actually going to do a competition - at beginner level. Dancing ALWAYS puts a smile on my face!"

Lisa A.

"Having never danced at all, and faced with our daughter's wedding, we decided that lessons were in order. Not only did we get to enjoy ourselves at the wedding, we have continued with lessons because we're having so much fun and love the learning process!

We've taken both group and private lessons, with both Anne Marie and John. I can't possibly say enough about their teaching skills! Incredible patience, coupled with the ability to spot issues with technique AND gently correct them before they become bad habits, is exactly what we need."

Dan G.

"Have been enrolled as Dancesport Boston student for over three years. John, Anne Marie, and Ferdinand, lead teachers here are seasoned professional dancers and competitors, who are also gifted, caring and good humored teachers.

I used to think of ballroom dance as being corny. Becoming a Dancesport Boston ballroom dance student has not only helped me grow as as dancer, but has also enabled me to re-learn proper posture, develop healthy eating practices, and strengthen social skills."

  • Do I need to come with a partner?

Coming with a partner is the ideal scenario; however, since many students tend to start in a group class partners are not required since there will be others without partners as well. If a student starts with private lessons their teacher fills in the role of the partner.

  • Do I need dancing shoes?

Ballroom dance shoes are the best shoes for ballroom dancing so we suggest you consider buying a pair if you plan to take lessons and/or dance regularly.

We have a terrific ballroom dance shoe catalog with many styles and colors to choose from. Ask us and we will be happy to place an order for you.

If ballroom shoes are not an immediate option for you then a pair of thin leather-soled shoes for men and low heels for women are suitable. Ladies, please note that sling-back sandals are not a good choice. A shoe that has a closed back is a better choice.

  • How long will it take me to become a good dancer?

It is a difficult question to answer. How long it takes for someone to become a good dancer is dependent upon a few different things but mainly on how often someone receives instruction and how often someone practices. Not everyone learns at the same pace. In DanceSport Boston's experience, we have seen it take an average of 1 - 2 years for the average person with little or no experience in dance. This is historically based on coming in once or twice a week. You must put in the mileage on the dance floor on a regular basis. It is fun and someone has to do it ...let it be you?

Let's take a minute and do the math ...2 years is only 104 hours or just over 4 days...and look at the return... a lifetime of enjoyment on the dance floor... We will help and encourage you to stick with it until you are satisfied with the results.

Becoming an accomplished dancer takes time and effort.

  • What is your cancellation policy?

DanceSport Boston has a 24 hour notice cancellation policy for private lessons. If proper notice is not received the scheduled lesson is charged as if it had been taken. There are no exceptions allowed on this policy.

We ask that you give us courtesy notice if you cannot make your scheduled group class during the week.

  • How can I register for your dance lessons?

There are several ways to get in touch with us at Dancesport Boston. We can be reached by phone at 617-325-1562. You can email us at dancesportboston@dancesportboston.com. You can fill out any of our PDFs, or send us a message via our contact page. Whatever way you choose, someone will assist you as soon as possible. We can't wait to get you dancing!

  • What happens if I miss a class?

You can make up your class within the same term you are registered. Do it in another class

held on another night of the week. You can even make classes up in advance if you know you

will be away during the term. However, missed classes may not be made up once your current

    class term expires.
